A Message from our Library Director
Is it October already? Whoa! September was so busy in the library! We rolled back into the school-year routine and started up all of our fall programs. Karen and I traveled to a faraway land (Albuquerque, New Mexico) to learn from rural and small library colleagues from around the country. I spent a few days with other library directors from around the state, and then we had a fun Art Gala at the library! We’re exhausted!
And now our favorite spooky month is here again! We have some fun creepy events scheduled this October, and of course we’re planning what costumes to wear to work in the library at the end of the month! This upcoming weekend, we will have yet another Star Party, one of our favorite programs every spring and fall. The Cache Valley Astronomical Society will set up their telescopes in the parking lot this Friday, Oct. 3 at 8 PM. We’ll start with a short informative presentation as the skies darken, and then walk over to peer up at spectacular celestial objects in the heavens. It’s a fun event for the whole family and one that we really look forward to twice a year!
Then, at noon on Saturday, Oct. 4, local author and friend of the library A.M. Luzzader will read from her scary book Creep Factor during our Teen Saturday activity. A question and answer session will follow the reading, and I’ve heard through the grapevine that there will even be some spooky snacks. This program is recommended for horror fans, ages 13+. We’re also planning a fun Halloween teen party on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 5-7 PM after we close the library. This is a fall highlight, with pizza and snacks, Jackbox games, fun crafts, and more. Don’t miss it, costumed teens!
Thank you for your support and your participation in making the library a community hub for Smithfield! Your friendly neighborhood library director, Shawn ❤️

Michael Neilson Community Seed Library
Grab, grow, and give!
Seed libraries work the same as any library. Pick up some seeds. Grow vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers. Harvest the seeds. Return them for the next person to use.
Our seed library is named after our friend Mike, a long-time supporter and champion of the Smithfield Public Library. We’re grateful to be able to honor his generosity and community service with this new collection. Seed libraries allow library patrons to borrow fruit, vegetable, herb, and flower seeds and take them home to plant in their yards and gardens, free of charge. The seeds we’ve selected are mainly open-pollinated heirloom varieties that are ideal for our Cache Valley climate, and our hope is that with each successful harvest, seed borrowers will be able to dry and return seeds back to the library for next season!
