A Message from our Library Director

Hello, library friends! Normally, my message in the December newsletter would focus on all of the fun holiday programs and events that we enjoy during the Christmas season. This year’s a little different, however, with the library being closed for part (or all) of December as we do some renovations in the building. Even though we’ll be closed for much of this month, there are still some great events happening in early December!

The Storybook Festival is an immersive holiday celebration of the arts in our beautiful town. It’s presented by the Smithfield Arts Council and takes place right here in Library Square on Dec. 8th from 5:30-8:00 PM. Come enjoy live actors acting out scenes from this year’s book (The Nutcracker and the Mouse King) in the library’s windows and pick up a free kids’ book at the Arts Council tent, courtesy of Gibbs Smith Publishers. We’ll have live music, storytellers, food and craft vendors, a scavenger hunt, and even a visit from Santa Claus! It’s going to be a blast!

We close at 3 PM on the day of the Festival (Dec. 8) and will remain closed until the replacement of our first-floor carpet is complete and all of our books are back on the shelves. We’re hoping the job will be quick but we’re also planning for the possibility of delays. We’ve already extended all due dates to January 5th, just in case, and we’re relaxing the limits on checkouts so that families can borrow more items for the extended closure time. Our book drop will be closed during the project, so we appreciate your patience in keeping your books for a while!

We’ll update Smithfield on the status of the project via the library’s Instagram and Facebook pages, so please follow us for the most up-to-date information. We appreciate you all so much and hope your holidays are filled with warmth, light, and all of the pleasures of the season. Thank you being part of the library this year!

Your friendly neighborhood library director, Shawn

Michael Neilson Community Seed Library

Michael Neilson Community Seed Library
Grab, grow, and give!

Seed libraries work the same as any library. Pick up some seeds. Grow vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers. Harvest the seeds. Return them for the next person to use.

Our seed library is named after our friend Mike, a long-time supporter and champion of the Smithfield Public Library. We’re grateful to be able to honor his generosity and community service with this new collection. Seed libraries allow library patrons to borrow fruit, vegetable, herb, and flower seeds and take them home to plant in their yards and gardens, free of charge. The seeds we’ve selected are mainly open-pollinated heirloom varieties that are ideal for our Cache Valley climate, and our hope is that with each successful harvest, seed borrowers will be able to dry and return seeds back to the library for next season!
