A Message from our Library Director
Hello, Smithfield!
Summer has arrived! And that means it’s finally time for the Smithfield Public Library’s legendary Summer Reading Program! We’ve been building it for months, and we’re finally able to roll up our sleeves and get started as we provide exciting challenges and programs for all ages during June and July.
Our theme this year is “Color Our World” and that means we’re celebrating art and creativity throughout the library. Make sure to check out the fun decorations on both floors of the library, including Karen’s I-Spy boards in the downstairs hallway, and Jessie’s Teen Zone windows which pay tribute to famous artists from around the world. Kathy also painted a fun striped dinosaur on our front window, and I think we need to give it a name. Any suggestions?
We have reading challenges for kids, teens, and adults that will keep everyone motivated and enjoying their reading during June and July. Reading records will be available for pickup on Monday, June 2, so find the correct one for your age group and start tracking your reading time! Everyone who completes a challenge will receive a prize. Teens who complete tasks on their Reading Bingo cards can enter drawings for some truly cool prizes, and all kids will get to spin the weekly prize wheel plus have a chance to pick out a book to keep when they finish their records!
We also have fun daily events and activities: creative crafting and art time, movies, games, and science activities like Fidgety Fingers and STEM With Shawn. Our Teen Saturdays are going to be a blast (Oreo Tasting, anyone?) and we can’t forget Miss Karen’s epic Storytimes in the Park! And she’s added Book Babies in the Park! So awesome!
We can’t wait to have you join us for summer fun!
--- Shawn, a.k.a. Your Friendly Neighborhood Library Director

Michael Neilson Community Seed Library
Grab, grow, and give!
Seed libraries work the same as any library. Pick up some seeds. Grow vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers. Harvest the seeds. Return them for the next person to use.
Our seed library is named after our friend Mike, a long-time supporter and champion of the Smithfield Public Library. We’re grateful to be able to honor his generosity and community service with this new collection. Seed libraries allow library patrons to borrow fruit, vegetable, herb, and flower seeds and take them home to plant in their yards and gardens, free of charge. The seeds we’ve selected are mainly open-pollinated heirloom varieties that are ideal for our Cache Valley climate, and our hope is that with each successful harvest, seed borrowers will be able to dry and return seeds back to the library for next season!
