A Message from our Library Director
Hello, library friends! National Library Week is April 6-12 this year, and we’re excited to celebrate the many ways in which libraries improve our lives and our communities. Drop by the library any time next week to write a message for our staff and thank them for their hard work. We’ll even have cookies on Wednesday, April 9! Come celebrate!
This winter, Michele and Karen and I have been working together on the new Michael Nielson Community Seed Library, which we’ve named after our friend Mike, a long-time supporter and champion of the Smithfield Public Library. We’re grateful to be able to honor his generosity and community service with this new collection. Seed libraries allow library patrons to borrow fruit, vegetable, herb, and flower seeds and take them home to plant in their yards and gardens, free of charge. The seeds we’ve selected are mainly open-pollinated heirloom varieties that are ideal for our Cache Valley climate, and our hope is that with each successful harvest, seed borrowers will be able to dry and return seeds back to the library for next season! We’ll also have gardening books and other resources available to help you select what you’d like to grow. We’re so excited about this new library resource and we should be ready to start lending seeds during National Library Week!
On a related note, our spring Localscapes class will be meeting on Saturday, April 12 from 10 AM to noon. Come learn about a state program that pays homeowners to replace grass in their yards with water-wise landscape alternatives, with an emphasis on beautiful, easy-to-maintain plants and features. We’re excited about our expert presenters and their wealth of gardening knowledge, and we hope to see you there!
Your friendly neighborhood library director,
Shawn

Grab, grow, and give!
Seed libraries work the same as any library. Pick up some seeds. Grow vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers. Harvest the seeds. Return them for the next person to use.
