A Message from our Library Director

Hello, library friends! Wow, you’re really keeping the staff of the Smithfield Library on our toes! It’s been really busy in the library in January, so I decided to look at the data. We track the visit of every patron into the building and collect those numbers for our statistical reports. I had a hunch that we’d see a pattern and boy, was I right! In 2025, we had 2842 patron visits between January 2-29.

This year, we saw 3773 people in the same timeframe. That’s an increase of 931 visits, and during one of the slowest months of the year! These stats help us to understand what we’re all experiencing intuitively: Smithfield loves its library and is using it more than ever. I reported recently about the jump in visits last year (43,309, to be exact) and if the next 11 months are anything like January, we could easily see that number go over 50,000. Whew!

This upswing in usage changes the trajectory of how we plan things like our programs. We’ve had so many families try to attend Miss Karen’s story times that we’re adding a second Toddler Train session every week (on Thursday mornings at 10:30 AM, in addition to the current Wednesdays at the same time.) We limit attendance to 50 people (kids and their caregivers) and we do require tickets to keep us within these limits. This new session joins our other amazing kids’ programs like Preschool Storytime, Music and Movement, Discovery Days, and Book Babies.

Children’s programs aren’t the only offerings we have planned over the next few months. We’ll have visits from authors Melissa Lark in February and Darren Parry in March, and our teens will continue to enjoy events like Dungeons and Dragons and Tasting Club. We’re even talking about an Anime Club in the months to come!

Thank you for visiting and using your community library; we love seeing you and serving you. See you soon!

Your friendly neighborhood library director, Shawn

New Flooring at the library

Hello, Smithfield!

We have good news! The first-floor renovation project at the library is finished and we're re-opening on Friday, December 26 at 10:00 AM! We've been closed since Dec. 4 and the staff of the library have put in a lot of work during the project, but things will be back to normal in just a few days.

The building and book drop will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25 for the Christmas holiday, and then we'll be open Dec. 26-27 from 10:00 AM- 5:00 PM, closed on Sunday the 28th, and then open Dec. 29-31 from 10:00 AM-5:00 PM, which is our normal schedule for the days in between the holidays. We'll be closed on Thursday. Jan. 1 for New Year's Day, but will follow our normal hours after that.

We're so appreciative of your patience and understanding during the last two weeks, and we're really looking forward to seeing you all again very soon!

Michael Neilson Community Seed Library

Michael Neilson Community Seed Library
Grab, grow, and give!

Seed libraries work the same as any library. Pick up some seeds. Grow vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers. Harvest the seeds. Return them for the next person to use.

Our seed library is named after our friend Mike, a long-time supporter and champion of the Smithfield Public Library. We’re grateful to be able to honor his generosity and community service with this new collection. Seed libraries allow library patrons to borrow fruit, vegetable, herb, and flower seeds and take them home to plant in their yards and gardens, free of charge. The seeds we’ve selected are mainly open-pollinated heirloom varieties that are ideal for our Cache Valley climate, and our hope is that with each successful harvest, seed borrowers will be able to dry and return seeds back to the library for next season!
