A Message from our Library Director
Hello, library friends! It’s back-to-school time once again, and that meets a return to our usual busy fall program schedule. Miss Karen’s story times are beginning right after Labor Day, and we have several great teen and adult programs scheduled during September as well. Here are just a few of the highlights:
We have two informative gardening workshops this month: Seed Saving with our library friend (and Master Gardener) Kelly on Sept. 9th at 5:30 PM, and another presentation on the Department of Natural Resource’s LocalScapes program on Sept. 13th at 10:00 AM. These programs can help you learn about creating a sustainable garden and yard that are both beautiful and productive while conserving water. (Which sounds pretty good to me, considering the drought we’ve experienced this summer!)
Jessie has been planning some awesome teen programs for the fall, and her Book Dragons book club for 3rd-5th graders will now have a teen version for grades 6 and up, which will join our rotation of fun Saturday teen activities each month. She and I will also be co-facilitating our Girls Who Code Club, which teaches programming/STEM skills to young women in grades 6-12. GWC moves to alternating Mondays this year, and our first meeting is Sept. 15th at 4 PM.
On Sept. 27th, the Smithfield Arts Council is sponsoring a Library Art Gala from 7 PM to 8:30 PM. We’re celebrating the recent restoration of the library’s art collection with a fun dress-up evening for teens and adults, 16+. We’ll have live music, refreshments, and information about some of our featured Utah artists. I’ll see you there (in a jacket and tie!)
With love and respect from your friendly neighborhood library director,
Shawn

Michael Neilson Community Seed Library
Grab, grow, and give!
Seed libraries work the same as any library. Pick up some seeds. Grow vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers. Harvest the seeds. Return them for the next person to use.
Our seed library is named after our friend Mike, a long-time supporter and champion of the Smithfield Public Library. We’re grateful to be able to honor his generosity and community service with this new collection. Seed libraries allow library patrons to borrow fruit, vegetable, herb, and flower seeds and take them home to plant in their yards and gardens, free of charge. The seeds we’ve selected are mainly open-pollinated heirloom varieties that are ideal for our Cache Valley climate, and our hope is that with each successful harvest, seed borrowers will be able to dry and return seeds back to the library for next season!
