Let the Smithfield Public Library Fill Your Summer with COLOR!
Summer reading is a great way for everyone to discover new books and improve their reading skills. Children can maintain academic progress, while teens can explore new genres and authors, and adults can reduce stress and improve well-being. The library offers a range of programs for all ages, making reading fun and engaging. Plus, participants have the chance to win prizes! Paint your summer in every shade of fun as you read, create, learn, play, and connect your way to prizes all summer long!

Summer Reading Begins June 2
Our reading programs are a fantastic, fun, and free alternative to costly summer activities. Dive into our summer reading challenges and enjoy an enriching experience without breaking the bank! We'll have programs for babies to adults and you can earn prizes, drawing entries, books and more! Don't miss out on the opportunity to enhance your reading abilities and have a great time this summer at the library.

Teen Summer Kick-Off Party
Saturday June 7 Noon - 3:00 pm ages 12-18
Join us in the teen library for music, snack, crafts, games and fun. Sign up for our summer teen reading program for chances to earn prizes and entries to drawing for cool prizes like a mini fridge, a Hogwarts Lego set, a Kindle, air pods and more! ...and did we mention snacks!?!

Mindful Movement
Tuesdays @ 1:30 pm
Grab a chair and join us in connecting movement and meditation in this fun low impact class focused on mindfulness and stretching! *Taught by a certified yoga instructor*

Teen Dungeons & Dragons
Wednesdays 5-7 pm
Delve into dangerous caves, climb perilous peaks, strategize with your trusty party--or eat some stinky cheese. The story you experience is up to you and your dice! Come have some fun and play with your friends.
Teens 12-18 invited to join. Beginning players and parties welcome!

Storytime in the Park
Thursdays @ 10 am
Join Miss Karen in Smithfield's Central Park, just north of the library for a storytime under the bright summer skies. Bring a blanket and listen to stories, sing songs & move your bodies at this super fun storytime program for families of all ages!

Stitch & Stories
Thursday @ 1 pm
Bring your fiber crafts to the library and listen to stories while you stitch. Knitting, crochet, embroidery, tatting, quilting... whatever your preference. It's like a book club for fiber artists!

Conversaciones/Conversations
Thursdays 6 pm
Practice your Spanish/Practice your English at the Library.
Practice Spanish with native speakers and help them practice their English. Learn with new friends!

Reverse Coloring @ the Library
Friday, June 6
Visit the library and try your hand at reverse coloring! Reverse coloring is a more inspiring form of doodling since it uses a page with abstract watercolor shapes as the basis for your artwork. The pre-existing colored shapes will inspire your creativity as your imagination finds new beauty and patterns in the combinations of lines and colors.
Families are invited to drop in and experience reverse coloring for themselves in our children's library. Stay and doodle or take home a uniquely colored page and a pen to doodle at home. Whatever you choose you'll end up with a fun and eye-catching piece of artwork!

Teen Saturdays @ Noon
teens 11-18
Join us on the first three Saturdays of each month for Teen Saturdays at the Library! Each week offers something different — from creative crafts and hands-on workshops to exciting themed events. It’s a chance to try something new, meet other teens, and enjoy a welcoming space just for you. All programs are free and materials are provided.

First-Aid for Teens w/ the Smithfield Fire Dept.
Monday, June 9 @ 4 pm
This event is designed to help equip teens with essential safety knowledge. Whether you’re getting ready for your first babysitting job or just want to be prepared in an emergency, this event will give you the tools you need! This is also a great chance to talk to someone in the emergency services sector if you are interested in pursuing a career within that field.

Teen Crafts w/ CAPSA
2nd Tuesday @ 4 pm
Emotional education and awareness through crafting! Meet with a CAPSA representative to do a fun craft while learning about things like confidence building, upstanding, and emotional resilience.

STEM with Shawn
Wednesday, June 11 & July 9 @ 3 pm, ages 9-14
June 11: How to Build a Watermelon: Starting Summer Seeds!
We’ll learn how seeds grow into living plants which produce tasty fruits and vegetables, and then we’ll plant seeds from our Seed Library that you can take home in a mini growing station so you can grow some amazing food at home!
July 9: Pirates Sailing the Airwaves: Building a Micro Radio Station!
We’ll learn how radio waves carry music and voices through the air, around the world, and even straight through walls! Then we’ll assemble FM radio receivers (that you can take home!) and use them to test the library’s transmitter as we put Smithfield STEM Radio on the air!

Read a book with a color in the title or with a colorful book cover to go along with the library's summer reading program.

Listen to any audio books. The Libby app is a great way to get audio books. Contact the library to find out how to use Libby with your library card!

Fidgety Fingers
Fridays, June 13 & 27, July 11 & 25 @ 10:30 am
Fun STEAM crafts & activities at the library for children 5-11 years old.
June 13: We are making colorful wind chimes
June 27: Wear clothing you can get messy in because we will be pendulum painting
July 11: EXPLOSIONS! Explore the science of carbon dioxide as we make spectacular soda explosions
July 25: We'll be making tasty fruit boba to eat

Crafting Workshop: Fairy Houses
Wednesday, June 18 @ 1 pm for ages +16
Join us for a relaxing afternoon as we transform plain cardboard mini-houses into magical fairy dwellings. All you need is your creativity all other materials will provided.
*Space is limited nd is first come first served. This program is intended for participants 16 years and older.

Book Babies in the Park!
Friday, June 20 & July 18 @ 10 am, babies 0-18 months
Join Miss Karen for a 20 minute Book Babies class in the park. Bring a blanket and we'll meet in the green space on the north side of the library by the Lion's stage for songs, movement, rhymes and lots and lots of interactive sound practice for our little ones. There will be time at the end of the program to chat with other parents while the babies play!

Teddy Bear Clinic
Wednesday, June 25, 1-3 pm
Kids ages 3-11 can bring their stuffed friend to the library for a full health screening. Kids will become 'doctors' and check for fevers, broken bones, scrapes & cuts and then fix their stuffed friends up. Don't miss this opportunity to care for your stuffed pals!

Family "Chopped" Art Activity
Saturday, June 28 @ 10:30 am
Families will get to experience the thrill of creating art together. Each family will receive a blind bag of craft supplies to include in their collaborative creation along with access to a limited supply of basic art supplies. We'll then have a 'judging' of our creations and prizes will be give for most creative, most colorful, etc.

Smithfield Library's Tiny Art Show
Create a tiny work of art and return it to the library to be displayed in our tiny art show!
July 1st: Pick up a tiny art kit to take home and begin creating your tiny work of art! You'll have two weeks to complete your art and return it to the library for the tiny art show. You can use the art supplies provided or any you have at home to create your tiny art. The only rule... it must be tiny!
July 15th: Today is the day your tiny art must be returned to the library.
July 22nd: Visit the library and check out all the tiny art. We'll have refreshments to nibble as you tour the library and look at the amazing creativity in our community!

Kids Crafting @ the Library
Wednesday July 23, 10:30 am - Noon
I Spy... a crafty activity for kids at the library! Kids ages 3-11are invited to drop in and make a mini 'I Spy' board. We'll have all the materials on hand to make unique and fun boards full of fun things to find.

Summer Reading Finale Party
Saturday, August 2 11-3 pm
Join us as we celebrate a summer full of color & reading! There will be music, food trucks, foam, games and much, much more!
